Course Structure

ICSK-L2 -Level 2 Award in Introduction to Counselling Skills (the curriculum is subject to change)

Length of course: The course runs 30 hours in total.

Day and Hours per week: These are generally carried out over extended weekend training room sessions totalling 10 hours per week(X 3 Weeks).

Class size: There will be a maximum of 20 on the course.

Summary list of Units

  1. Work within the limitations of the helping role
  2. Establish boundaries for helping work
  3. Communicate empathic understanding
  4. Focus on the helpee’s agenda
  5. Understand the importance of self-awareness in helping work
  6. Use listening and responding skills
  7. Use review and feedback to develop initial counselling skills

Assessment

There are no timed exams, however all written assignments will have deadlines for submission and be a mixture of written and practical work including: a weekly Reflective Learning Journal and class and small group presentations.

Pass (Proficient)/Fail (Not Proficient) Tutor assessment of candidate portfolio evidencing minimum assessment requirements.  Independent verification by CPCAB.

Progression

Successful candidates at this level may progress onto Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills . You will be advised of your options to meet your individual career goals during the programme.

CSK-L2-Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills (the curriculum is subject to change)

  2. Establish and sustain the boundaries of the helping role
  3. Work empathically as a helper
  4. Focus on the helpee’s needs and concerns
  5. Use self awareness in helping work
  6. Use a range of counselling skills to facilitate the helping interaction
  7. Use feedback and reflection to enhance counselling skills

Assessment

All written assignments will have deadlines for submission and be a mixture of written and practical work including: a weekly Reflective Learning Journal; yearly Personal Development Summary; essays related to lecture material; a case study; a clinical tape  a research project; and class and small group presentations.

Internal assessment: tutor assessment of candidate portfolio evidencing minimum assessment requirements and verified by CPCAB.

External assessment: externally assessed written paper after watching a CPCAB DVD under exam conditions and assessed by CPCAB.

Progression

Successful candidates at Level 2 may progress onto Level 3. On completion of Level 3 you may progress onto CPCAB’s Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling (TC-L4) or the credits may be used as entry onto other relevant qualifications eg Foundation degree, Degree. You will be advised of your options to meet your individual career goals during the programme.

CST-L3-Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies (the curriculum is subject to change)

Length of course: The course runs 90 in total.

Venue:

Day and Hours per week: These are generally carried out over extended weekend training room sessions totalling 10 hours per week( X 9 weekends).

Start date:

Class size: There will be a maximum of 25 on the course.

  1. Prepare to work within an ethical framework for counselling
  2. Understand the counselling relationship
  3. Understand difference and diversity issues to develop empathic understanding
  4. Work within a user-centred approach to counselling
  5. Use counselling theory to develop self-awareness in counselling practice
  6. Understand theories of counselling and mental health
  7. Use feedback, reflection and supervision to support counselling studies

Assessment

All written assignments will have deadlines for submission and be a mixture of written and practical work including: a weekly Reflective Learning Journal; yearly Personal Development Summary; essays related to lecture material; a case study; a clinical tape  a research project; and class and small group presentations.

Internal assessment: tutor assessment of candidate portfolio evidencing minimum assessment requirements and verified by CPCAB.

External assessment: externally assessed written paper after watching a CPCAB DVD under exam conditions and assessed by CPCAB.

TC-L4 Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling (the curriculum is subject to change)

Course structure

Length of course: The course runs over two academic years and is 420 hours in total

The group meet weekly except for half term and college holidays.

Unit 7 – Working self-reflectively as a counsellor

Assessment

There are no timed exams, however all written assignments will have deadlines for submission and be a mixture of written and practical work including: a weekly Reflective Learning Journal; yearly Personal Development Summary; essays related to lecture material; a case study; a clinical tape & verbatim analysis; a research project; and class and small group presentations. A comprehensive Student handbook outlining the course units, criteria and requirements is made available to each student.

Internal assessment: tutor assessment of candidate portfolio evidencing minimum assessment requirements and verified by CPCAB.

External assessment: externally assessed audio recording of counselling session with a peer, plus an associated written paper taken under exam conditions and assessed by CPCAB.

Progression

Successful candidates at Level 2 may progress onto Level 3. On completion of Level 3 you may progress onto CPCAB’s Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling (TC-L4) or the credits may be used as entry onto other relevant qualifications eg Foundation degree, Degree, etc.

After course completion students may additionally progress onto higher education or work towards applying for counsellor accreditation with the   Association of Christian Counsellors (ACC)   or the   British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) . However, in order to gain full accreditation with any of these bodies, candidates will have to meet all other ACC or BACP criteria including further hours of supervised counselling practice beyond the duration of the course.
