Core Model: ‘Integrative Approach’

The London Life Training portfolio premise is fully based upon seeing the value of openness to the views of other approaches/schools of counselling and psychotherapy. It is based upon our attempt[1] to integrate two or more different theoretical views or systems of counselling/psychotherapy (as opposed to ‘taking a bit of this and taking a bit of that’, for a particular clients from any perspective that suits the therapist, as is generally associated within the ‘eclectic movements’).

London Life Training uses an ‘integrative model’, an integration of ‘person centred traditions therapy (and techniques)’ and ‘psychological/psychodynamic traditions therapy (and techniques)’. This model is not attached to a single school of thinking because human relating means that no one single model and or interventions works for all service users in every life situation.

By using the wealth from both ‘traditions’, the range and depth of concepts, skills and intervention modes are available for use to the practitioner and the current and emerging profession[2].

Using the Core Model/Core Model Plus format[3], each service user is purposely engaged through/within a variety of helping levels with the practitioner being very disciplined/held within the framework, while also having a clear appreciation for working with and through issues of human difference and diversity (where the model is flexible to meet the service user needs and not the service user adjusting to meet the practitioner needs).

A range of teaching methods will be used to meet the learning outcomes of the course according to the needs of the participants. These may include tutor-led presentations, group discussion, individual and group experiential work, personal development exercises, role plays, interpersonal skills practice, presentations, peer and self-assessment. You will be guided throughout by your course tutor and there is additional support where needed – these are outlined in the Centre Handbook.
